The 'devil' is speaking to David and trying to convince him to take his own life,and that is what is being shown in the lyrics. Its a sad song about someone's conscience telling them to give up on life because there loved one is dead.

The song is about Davids EX-girlfriend who had commited suicide. David stated in an interview that Devon was very troubled, and was doing drugs. David tried to help her as much as he could but nothing seemed to work so he broke up woth her. As a result she commited suicide. The parents of 'Devin' blamed David for her suicide and never forgiven him. The song comes from the funeral of Devin. It was an open casket and as David looked over her body, he thought as if the devil was talking over his shoulder basically saying kill yourself and join devin in hell.

This is shown in the lyrics from the lead up to the chorus and the chorus of which David is pretending to be the devil. It's about The singer walking in on his dead girlfriend when he was a teen ager and he herd voices in his head telling him to kill himself to be with her. My interpretation the way I see is that David had a girlfriend but she sold her soul to the devil and now its haunting him. This is a very good song. God wanted us to stay on this earth till HE decided when its time for us to leave.

God should be only one to take our lives not us. God has a reason for us to stay on this earth. Suicide is more common in teens than in adults. From David, "It's about me standing over the body of my girlfriend who has just killed herself and the speaking voice in the song is the voice ofthe devil speaking to me over my shoulder trying to convince me to take my own life as well so I can still be with her in the afterlife.
