Along those lines, water is conductive, which is why the screen can go loopy if you try it use it in the rain or if your hands are wet. Sausages work very well! Now, should I take you are saying my finger is bigger than a sausage? Actually I don't know your fingers :-p — bot Oh heck, even a wurstel is bigger than my fingers except my thumb.
So then accept it as a tip for using iDevices while wearing gloves. Bananas work better. All answers thus far are somewhat inaccurate or vague. Not quite - you need a voltage difference to generate an electric field. When you touch the screen, the iPod's circuitry detects the presence of your finger. It keeps track of how many fingers you have on the screen and where you move them. It also gives the iPod touch the capability of running apps -- something even the newest iPod nano can't do. The iPod touch does this using a layer of capacitive material under a protective covering. You can read How Capacitors Work to learn more about them, but the basic idea involves taking advantage of the electrical properties of the human body.
When you touch a capacitive surface, the amount of charge it holds changes. This is why devices like the iPod touch require you to touch them with your bare skin -- insulating materials like gloves, pens and styluses don't cause the same changes in the capacitive circuitry. Regardless of which method the screen uses, you change the electrical properties of the screen every time you touch it.
The iPod records this change as data, and it uses mathematical algorithms to translate the data into an understanding of where your fingers are. In the next section, we'll explore what the iPod touch does with this data and how to navigate through its features. The iPod touch's processor keeps track of where you put your fingers and where they move once you've placed them on the screen. You can slide your fingers from place to place, or you can make pinching or spreading motions to zoom in and out.
The iPod touch matches what your fingers are doing with what's happening on the screen:. Here's an example. The capacitive layer detects your touch on the screen, and the processor and gesture software cross-reference the touch data with the application in use. The processor relays a message to the iPod touch's screen, telling it to display an image of a keyboard. The screen then detects the location of each virtual key you touch, and the screen displays the corresponding letter in the URL field.
Each time you touch the screen, the process of determining what you're touching and why happens in the background, almost instantaneously.
The gestures themselves are fairly intuitive. To press on-screen buttons, you simply touch them. You can scroll through lists of files by sweeping your finger up and down the screen. If you turn the iPod touch horizontally, you can browse music through CoverFlow , an animated display of your music's cover art. As with the iPhone , you can zoom in to pictures and Web pages by using two fingers and spreading them apart, as if stretching to make the picture bigger.
And both are clearly moving out to the pasture. It still fills an important niche for Apple — the cheap niche. Instead, the shuffle focuses on its VoiceOver capabilities the carry-over from the last generation, which fully relied on them. But again, this iPod refresh, which Apple CEO Steve Jobs called their biggest one yet, clearly points to the future of the line — and really, the future of Apple in general: touch.
The two big updates in the iPod lines this time around are the iPod nano and the iPod touch. The previous version of the nano was nice with its elongated form factor. That said, every time I used one, I had to fight the urge to touch its screen to navigate through it. Finally, I can do that. Yes, like the iPhone and iPod touch, the nano now has apps — sort of. So how do you control a touch screen device with such a small screen?
But when you need to return to the main menu, you simply hold one finger down for a few seconds on the screen and the main screen fades in. Album artwork is nicely displayed when music is playing, and touching the screen once will bring up controls.
Swiping to the right here gives you more options such as Genius and Shuffle. But the most interesting little feature of this nano is that you can use multi-touch to rotate the album artwork. Why would you want to do this? Because like the shuffle, the nano now comes with a clip on the back to easily attach it to a piece of clothing you have on.
This is one of the little things that makes Apple, Apple. The sound quality on the device is solid — in line with previous generations of nanos.
